Olympics have always been the biggest platform for an athlete to perform. With the 2016 Summer Olympics scheduled to begin from 5th August, India has decided to field the largest delegation by the nation in the history of Summer Olympics. The flag bearer for the contingent will be the talented Abhinav Singh Bindra. Abhinav won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 10m Air Rifle event.

There are 120 Indian athletes who will be participating in Rio Olympics 2016 across 66 events. Here’s the break up

Athletics

India’s performance in athletics track and field events have not been up to the mark at the Olympics. India has maximized its chances by fielding as many as 36 athletes for the 2016 Summer Olympics. The list of athletes are:

Men Track & Field Events

  • Dharambir Singh – 200 m event
  • Muhammad Anas – 400 m event
  • Thonakal Gopi, Kheta Ram & Nitender Singh Rawat – Marathon event
  • Jinson Johnson – 800 m event
  • Manish Singh & Sandeep Kumar – 50 km walk
  • Gurmeet Singh, Baljinder Singh & Irfan Kolothum Thodi – 20 km walk
  • Arokia Rajiv, Muhammad Anas, Kunhu Mohammed & Ayyasamy Dharun – 4 x 400 m relay event
  • Ankit Sharma – Long jump event
  • Inderjeet Singh – Shot put event
  • Renjith Maheshwary – Triple jump event
  • Vikas Gowda – Discus throw event

Women Track & Field Events

  • Srabani Nanda – 200 m event
  • Dutee Chand – 100 m event
  • Nirmala Sheoran – 400 m event
  • Tintu Luka – 800 m event
  • Sudha Singh & Lalita Babbar – 3000 m steeplechase event
  • Kavita Raut, O.P.Jaisha, & Sudha Singh – Marathon event

Badminton

There are a total of 7 Indian badminton players that have qualified for the Olympics this year. These include

  • Srikanth Kidambi Singles
  • Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy Doubles
  • Saina Nehwal Singles
  • Pusarla Sindhu Singles
  • Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa Doubles

Boxing

There are 3 Indian boxers who will participate in the Olympics this year. These include

  • Shiva Thapa Bantamweight
  • Manoj Kumar Light welterweight
  • Vikas Krishan Yadav Middleweight

Hockey

The Indian hockey team has also qualified for the Olympics this year.

  • Men’s team – 16 members
  • Women’s team – 16 members

Golf

Based on the official ranking of all the international golf players, India will be sending three golfers to the Summer Olympics in Rio.

Gymnastics

This is the first time an Indian has qualified for this event since 1964. The woman has qualified for artistic gymnastics and she is

Judo

India has just one athlete that has qualified in the men’s middleweight category at the Summer Olympic Games. This spot was earned due to the continental quota spot in the Asian region. This athlete was the highest ranked Indian judo athlete in the IJF World Ranking List that was published on May 30, 2016.

Rowing

One Indian has qualified for the Rowing event this year.

Swimming

India received an invitation to send in 2 swimmers from the country this year. They picked one man and one woman to compete

Shooting

Indian shooters have earned their spot in the Rio Summer Olympics by virtue of their performance in the 2014 and 2015 ISSF World Championships, the Asian Championships and the 2015 ISSF World Cup Series. A squad of twelve shooters will be sent to the Olympics. This list includes 2008 Olympics air rifle champion, Abhinav Bindra and 2012 Olympics bronze medal winner, Gagan Narang.

  • Kynan Chenai – Trap event
  • Prakash Nanjappa – 50 m pistol event
  • Jitu Rai – 10 m air pistol and 50 m pistol events
  • Gagan Narang – 10 m air rifle, 50 m rifle prone and 50 m rifle 3 positions events
  • Chain Singh – 50 m rifle prone and 50 m rifle 3 positions events
  • Manavjit Singh Sandhu – Trap event
  • Gurpreet Singh – 10 m air pistol and 25 m rapid fire pistol events

Women

  • Apurvi Chandela & Ayonika Paul – 10 m air rifle event
  • Heena Sidhu – 10 m air pistol and 25 m pistol events

Table tennis

A total of 4 athletes from India will be seen competing in table tennis at the Olympics this year. They include

Tennis

There are a total of 4 players who will participate in the Olympics this year. They will be seen participating in various doubles events. These include

Weightlifting

2 weightlifters made it to the Olympics to represent India this year. These include

  • Sathish Sivalingam Men’s −77 kg
  • Saikhom Mirabai Chanu Women’s −48 kg

Wrestling

India will be sending 8 wrestlers representing various weight classes. These spots were decided on the basis of performance of the wrestler’s performances at the 2015 World Championships and 2016 Asian Qualification Tournament.
