Dalbir Singh Suhag is the current Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He was appointed as COAS on 31st July 2014, after the retirement of General Bikram Singh. He was born on 28th December 1954 to Ch Ramphal Singh who was a subedar-major in the 18th Cavalry Regiment. He hails from the Jhajjar district in Haryana. He finished his schooling from Sainik School, in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan and later joined the National Defense Academy in the year 1970. He also pursued his masters in Management Studies as well as strategic studies.
He married Namita Suhag, who a graduate in political science. He is very interested in doing physical activities and takes a keen interest on various sports like swimming and riding. He makes sure to run 10kms on a daily basis and enjoys horse riding and playing golf.
Dalbir Singh Suhag started his military career by joining the 4th battalion of the 5thGorkha Rifles on 16th June 1974. He was also an instructor in the Indian Military academy, Dehradun and served as the Company commander during the Operation Pawan in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He later took the command of the III corps, which had its headquarters in Dimapur, Nagaland. On16th June 2012, he was promoted as the General Officer Commanding of a Command (GOC-in-c) of the Eastern Army, which was based in Kolkata. He became the Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 31st December 2013 and remained so till 30th July 2014. On 14th May 2014, the government of India announced Dalbir Singh as the new COAS. The minister of defense suggested his name to the Appointments Committee of Cabinet, which was headed by the then PM Mr. Manmohan Singh. Dalbir Singh is the third officer from the Gorkha Rifles to become the Chief of Army after Late Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and General Gurunath Bewoor. He has won several awards and rewards in his military career including Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.
