“Want to be an achiever in life?

Then become the proud owner of Hero Achiever for a start” – this is what its manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp Ltd., is fervently hoping for! This reinvented bike, after a lukewarm response to its previous versions, is being marketed as dependable and sturdy and is available in 2 variants: kick-start and self-start. Whether this new avatar succeeds in grabbing the eyeballs and a chunk of motorcycle market is a question that is easily answered the moment we get into the nitty-gritty of its details.

The Look:

From its inception, Hero Achiever never possessed the killer looks of its rivals. And the new version with a few cosmetic changes is nothing much to write home about. The attempt to enhance its look by black finishing on alloy wheels, silencer, front forks and engine falls short, and so does the aesthetics of its restyled tinted visor and the headlight. On the whole, the bike does remain unexciting, due to its dull and uninspired styling.

The Console:

The instrument console comes as a complete disappointment, since no effort has been made to bring it at par with its other models. Not only is the look of the console a big let-down, it lacks certain essentials, like the tachometer. It only has an analogue speedometer and fuel gauge with a trip meter.

The Performance:

The aspects that could have made Hero Achiever a real life achiever have unfortunately not been touched in the new version. The bike is still powered by an air-cooled, OHC, 4-stroke, single cylinder 149.1cc engine that generates a maximum power output of 13.4 bhp at 8000 rpm that is not powerful enough. A torque output of 12.8 Nm is accessible at 5000 rpm. The gearbox is the same as in most other models – 5-speed manual gearbox with one gear down and four gears up-shift pattern.

The Ride:

Despite a sound engine and smooth revving, the bike struggles for nearly six seconds to reach from 0 to 60 kmph, a distinct disadvantage in the current city traffic. However, the ride becomes better on highways, where it easily crosses 100 kmph. The engine displays less vibrations at high speeds, but taller gear ratios, designed to increase fuel efficiency, result in frequent gear shifting.

The Consumption:

The bike is economical and gives around 58 kmpl in the city and more on highways. This makes the bike perfect for city commuting.

The Comfort and Safety:

Hero Achiever is a comfortable ride, what with its long and wide seat, front set foot pegs and easy-to-reach handlebar with perfect palm grip. The suspension system may not be the best, but functions well for a comfortable ride. This bike is lighter and steers smoothly, even on high speeds. However, cutting corners requires caution, since it has a wheelbase of only 1290mm that makes it less stable.

The Colours:

It is available in five shades – Magnetic Blue, Candy Blazing Red, Force Metallic Silver, Black Purple and Black Blue.

The Cost:

Hero Achiever with Disc Brake, self-starting is priced at Rs. 68,894.

The Verdict:

If you are not after looks and want a sturdy, economical and efficient bike, Hero Achiever is for you. It has everything to satisfy your need but not greed. It will never fail you while riding on Indian roads. Spare parts availability of this bike is far good than other bikes, reason being coming from a famous Indian brand of automobiles. It has great potential in it. Go for it. Follow the trend. Trend says achieve something big in your life.
