India is a country which has public holidays throughout the year. The lists of the Public Holidays are sent from the Government of India and the distributed in the country.  The holidays are generally separated by few names and these are applicable across the country. Even though apart from the government offices, all public holidays are not mandatory, but ten public holidays are mandatory in India. The government offices enjoy 14 such holidays. There are different kinds of Public Holidays, National Holiday, Restricted Holiday, Gazetted Holiday and Regional Holiday.

Republic Day – January 26

This is a Gazetted and National Holiday. This is a mandatory holiday and observed across the country to celebrate the day when the country became Republic.

Maha Shivaratri – March 7

This is a signifacant Shiva Puja in India. This is a Gazetted Holiday in India for 2016.

Holi – March 24

Holi is celebrated on the Northern and Eastern part of the India. It is celebrated in the west as well. It is a restricted holiday.

Good Friday – March 25

It is Gazetted Holiday enlisted in 2016.

B R Ambedkar Jayanti – April 14

The day to celebrate the birthday of B R Ambedkar is a Gazetted holiday.

Mahavir Jayanti – April 20

It is Gazetted Holiday and is celebrated for the occasion of birthday of Mahavir Jain.

Buddha Purnima – May 21

It is a Gazetted Holiday and is to celebrate the birth of Gautam Buddha.

July

Idu’l Fitr  – July 06

It is a Gazetted Holiday and is celebrated for Eid.

Independence Day – August 15

This is a National Holiday and Gazetted Holiday and is observed in the entire country.

This is to be celebrated on Monday on the occasion of Bakra Eid.

Dushhera – October 11

This would be celebrated on Tuesday for the Dushhera occasion. It is a Gazetted Holiday.

Muharram – October 12

Muharram would be celebrated on Wednesday. It is a Gazetted Holiday.

Diwali – October 30

The most anticipated festival of lights will be celebrated on October 30. It is a Gazetted Holiday.

November

Guru Nanak Birthday – November 14

It would be celebrated on November 14. It is a Gazetted Holiday.

December

Milad-ul-Navi – December 13

The birthday of Prophet Mohammed is celebrated on this day. This is Gazetted Holiday.

Christmas – December 25

The birthday of Jesus Christ is celebrated on Christmas and it is a Gazetted Holiday.

New Year’s Day – January 1

It is celebrated on Januray 1 for the purpose of welcoming the new year on Friday. It is a Restricted Holiday and depends upon the Employer to give or Employee to take as per the system.

Makar Sankranti – January 14

It is celebrated on Jan 14 on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti on Thursday. It is also a Restricted Holiday.

Pongal – January 15

It is celebrated on January 15 especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. This is also a Restricted Holiday.

Guru Govind Singh Jayanti – January 16

It is on January 16 and is to celebrate the birth of 10th Guru Govind Singh Ji. This is generally availed in the states like Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. It is restricted holiday.

Vasant Panchami – February 12

Vasant Panchami or Sarswati Puja are observed in eastern states like Bihar, west Bengal and others. It is a restricted holiday.

Shivaji Jayanti – Februay 19

This is celebrated on Friday in Maharasthra for birthday of Chatrapati Shivaji. This is a restricted holiday.

Ram Navami – April 15

Ram Navami is celebrated on April 15 and it is a Gazetted Holiday.

Janmashtami – August 25

This is to celebrate the birthday of Lord Krishna. It is a restricted holiday.

However, apart from these holidays, there are many Regional Holidays that can be implemented by the State Government to folliow.
