In midst of the elections tussle in Punjab, former Chief Minister of Punjab Surjit Singh Barnala died today on (14th January) in Chandigarh at age 91. Surjit Singh Badal has always tried to serve India and more profoundly Punjab, after his successful venture as the Chief Minister for 2 years 29th September 1985 to 11th June 1987. Surjit after a successful journey as CM of Punjab has served different parts of India as Governor, the state, and area he has served as governor are Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Andaman and Nicobar.

Barnala was born in Ateli region of Haryana on 21st October 1925, Barnala’s family was very well-to-do as Surjit’s father was the magistrate of the region. There is no information available about the initial schooling of Surjit, he passed the Law from Lucknow University in the year 1946. In Lucknow, only forming ways to higher education Surjit Singh Barnala came in contact with activist fighting for India’s freedom and got involved fully in Quit India Movement.

Career

The political career of Surjit started few years after the practice in the law field, he fought the first election in the year 1952 but unfortunately lost by just 4 votes. Barnala served as the Chief Minister of Punjab for two years and was part of the state-based political party known as Shiromani Akali Dal. After just two years of services as Chief Minister of Punjab, the presidential rule was imposed over Punjab. Surjit got great interest in literature as he translated one of the famous English text Story of an Escape from English to Punjabi.

Surjit Singh Barnala married Surjit Kaur Barnala who is also known as active Politician, Surjit Kaur also became President of Shiromani Akali Dal later.
